Exeter Blue Boy

By | January 20, 2026

The Exeter Blue Boy statue has been watching over shoppers in Exeter’s Princesshay shopping centre for decades!

In that time he’s met many visitors, posed for lots of photographs and witnessed plenty of events and displays going on around.

With origins that date back to 1733, the Exeter Blue Boy has stood in Princesshay since the post war centre opened in the 1950’s. After taking a break while the present shopping precinct was being built, the Blue Boy was back on a new stand and looking just as vibrant once completed.

The words on the stand beneath the statue reads:

This Statue Of A Blue Boy
Stood In The Courtyard Of
Saint John’s Hospital School
Founded On This Site
As A Bluecoat School
By The Chamber Of Exeter,
A.D. 1636 In The
Dissolved Mediaeval Hospital
Of Saint John The Baptist.
The School Continued Until 1931
In The New Buildings Erected In 1859
Which Were Destroyed By
Enemy Action On May 4th 1942
