We Still Have a Chance Mural<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I came across this mural today in Exeter. It has replaced the Witches Mural, which was previously there the last time that I passed. Well at least the last time I noticed any difference when passing this area, which is New Buildings near the main central library.<\/p>\n\n\n

We Still Have a Chance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The new mural is titled “We Still Have a Chance”. I understand that it was commissioned by Art Work Exeter and the University of Exeter as a replacement of its predecessor due to the wall painting’s deterioration coming with its age.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Witches<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

We Still Have a Chance Mural (2024)<\/strong>
Was created by Exmouth based artist Gary \u2018GARf\u2019 Cook<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A painting created to represent a positive and sustainable future for the city. It shows a young girl holding a butterfly and looking forward to the sun above green and renewable technologies. To the left, the image shows the environmental impact of the past – pollution from, oil driven transportation, waste, and landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlighting some of the history of Exeter through the centuries. The Phoenix Arts Centre can by seen in the background with Rougemont Castle, a Roman soldier, and our very own Gerald the giraffe from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum<\/a> amongst some of the tributes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three witches shown in the painting is to acknowledge the Devon Witches. These were the last to be executed for witchcraft in England. Also known as the Bideford three, they were tried at Rougemont Castle & hanged at Heavitree in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s a commemorative plaque<\/a> on the Rougemont Castle gatehouse with an inscription that reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Devon Witches.<\/em>
In memory of Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards,<\/em>
Mary Trembles, of Bideford, died 1682,<\/em>
Alice Molland, died 1685,<\/em>
the last people in England to be executed for witchcraft,<\/em>
tried here & hanged at Heavitree. <\/em>
In the hope of an end to persecution and intolerance.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
